Special Guest Artist
DJIBRIL N'DOYE
We recently met this artist/painter at the previously held Brentwood Arts and Crafts Festival here in Los Angeles, CA. His ArtWorks are amazing. Djibril is an internationally recognized artist with artwork in galleries, universities, homes, and businesses throughout West Africa, the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Western Europe, and Japan. Born in 1953 in Bargny, Seenegal, self-taught, and a member of the National Association of Artists/Graphics of Senegal (A.N.A.P.S.), Djibril N'Doye's public life began when he won First Prize in 1981 for and exhibit at the Popular Educational Center in Rufisque, Senegal. The following year he was awarded First Prize at the Balaise Senghor Cultural Center in Dakar, Senegal. This recognition led to a solo exhibit at the Daniel Sorano National Theatre in Dakar in 1984. One year later, Djibril founded Suunu Nit Artists Group in Bargny, his hometown, with the objective of encouraging and developing local artists, painters, and writers, and helping support Bargny's own artistic community.

A CALENDAR OF WISDOM
"There are two different states of human existence: first, to live without thinking of death; second, to live with the thought that you approach death with every hour of our life.
The more you transform your life from the material to the spiritual domain, the less you become afraid of death. A person who lives a truly spiritual life has no fear of death.
When you have doubts about what to do, just imagine that you might die at the end of that same day, and then all your doubts will disappear, and you will see clearly what your conscience tells you, and what is your true personal wish.
A man condemned to immediate execution will not think about the growth of his estate, or about achieving glory, or about the victory of one group over another, or about the discovery of a new planet. But one minute before his death a man may wish to console an abused person, or help an old person to stand up, or to put a bandage on someone's injury, or to repair a toy for a child."

The angel of Life
MEDITATION
From the point from which all Life flows,
It flows to me.
My part is to accept this life
Consciously
As a manifestation of God on earth.
It is I
Who bring Light and Love
Into this existence.
No angelic being can do it for me.
Yes, heartily do I accept
This responsibility!
Yes, gladly do I accept
The God in me!
EVENING FOCUS
The angel of Peace
THE BLESSING
Throughout me there is movement;
There is growth
Streaming to the outer bounds
Of my potential,
And I feel full and overflowing.
Yet at my center,
At the very core of me,
There is a quiet place
From which my guidance comes.
Let me learn to seek this center
Often.

A Kind Word
"Just as a mother would protect with her life her own son, her only son, so one should cultivate an unbounded mind towards all beings, and loving-kindness towards all the world. One should cultivate an unbounded mind, above and below and across, without obstruction, without enmity, without rivalry. Standing, or going, or seated, or lying down, as long as one is free from drowsiness, one should practice this mindfulness. This, they say, is the holy state here." - Sutta Nipata

KAZAM! THE GENIE IS OUT OF THE BOTTLE. OUR HEARTS ARE WIDE OPEN TO TAKE THE RISK OF LOVING ONE ANOTHER UNCONDITIONALLY. THE TIME IN NOW AND NOW IS THE TIME!
WE ARE HERE TODAY AS WE ARE EVERYDAY LIVING IN THE PRESENCE OF LIFE ITSELF. WHAT IS THE QUESTION TO WHICH WE PRESUME WE STILL DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER? THE ARTIST WITHIN US ALL IS CREATING MAGICAL MANIFESTATIONS THOURGHOUT THIS DYNAMIC KINDOM EVERYWHERE WE ARE UPON THIS PLANET EARTH. THE ESSENCE OF INNER TRUTH INFUSES THE CREATIVE GENIUS TO COME FORTH TO SET US FREE FROM OURSELVES.

We Human Beings like lions in winter roar loudly when confined, restricted, entrapped, caged and /or prohibited from being free as we were born to be! The Artists' creative surge is tapped like a vein of gold into the pulse of nature's global community with expressions of a peaceful, harmonious, joyful and compassionate universal consciousness. The ongoing quest propels everybody to address the question; can we live with the absolute truth about ourselves?
KING RICHARD II, SCENE V. Promfret Castle.
"I have been studying how I may compare
This prison where I live unto the world.
And for because the world is populous,
And here is not a crearure but myself,
I cannot do it, yet I'll hammer it out.
My brain I'll prove the female to my soul,
My soul the father, and these two beget
A generation of still breeding thoughts,
And these same thoughts people this little world,
For no thought is contented. The better sort,
As thoughts of things divine, are intermixed
With scruples, and do set the word itself
Against the word.
As thus, "Come, little ones," and then again,
"It is as hard to come as for a camel
To thread the postern of a small needle's eye."
Thoughts tending to ambition, they do plot
Unlikely wonders-how these vain weak nails
May tear a passage through the flinty ribs
Of this hard world, my ragged prison walls,
And, for they cannot, die in their own pride.
Thoughts tending to content flatter themselves
That they are not the first of fortune's slaves,
Nor shall not be the last like silly beggars
Who sitting in the stocks refuge their shame,
That many have and others must sit there.
And in this thought they find a kind of ease,
Bearing their own misfortunes on the back
Of such as have before endured the like.
Thus play I in one person many people,
And none contented. Sometimes am I King,
Then treasons make me wish myself a beggar,
And so I am. Then crushing penury
Persuades me I was better when a king.
Then am I kinged again. And by and by
Think that I am nothing. But whate'er I be,
Nor I not any man that but man is
With nothing shall be pleased till he be eased
With being nothing. Music do I hear?
Ha, ha! Keep time. How sour sweet music is
When time is broke and no proportion kept!
So is it in the music of men's lives.
And here have I the daintiness of ear
To check time broke in a disordered string,
But for the concord of my state and time
Had not an ear to hear my true time broke.
I wasted time, and now doth time waste me.
For now hath Time made me his numbering clock.
My thoughts are minutes, and with sighs they jar
Their watches on unto mine eyes, the outward watch,
Whereto my finger, like a dial's point,
Is pointing still, in cleansing them from tears.
Now, sir, the sound that tells what hour it is
Are clamorous groans, which strike upon my heart,
Which is the bell. So signs and tears and groans
Show minutes, times, and hours. But my time
Runs posting on in Bolingbroke's proud joy
While I stand fooling here, his Jack-o'-the-clock.
This music mads me, let it sound no more,
For though it have holp madmen to their wits,
In me it seems it will make wise men mad.
Yet blessing on his heart that gives it me!
For 'tis a sign of love, and love to Richard
Is a stange brooch in this all-hating world."
-WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
It is with great honor and dignity that we can acknowledge the numerous individuals throughout the world upholding the absolute truth of our divine being through ArtWorks. The Human world is a magnificent place where we are blessed to explore, discover and investigate the inner workings of our conscious awakening within this expanding universe. WE ARE THE GREAT POSSIBILITY!
We are a living organism within the embrace of breath moving in and out of visible and invisible realms producing causes and effects. What a blessing supreme! We are designed not to settle for less than we know we must have from Creation's omniscient dominion. In the attempts to describe any aspect of our creative nature or collective consciousness as a miracle, we inspire myriad life expressions which do no permit any terms and/or definitions to weigh us down. We may struggle, stumble, fret and search for new information that affirms that we have no conclusions to seek and find; for life is a continuous work in progress by it's nature. The apparent states of perpetual confusion throughout life's universal system announces with every twist and turn in contemplation of mind, body and soul concepts that we are a specialty. It is a fact of existence that we cannot pinpoint the exactitude of the elemental or primary cause of our Being's origin, however we can accept that we are the vast silent noise of conscious awakening. The internal echoes break through external sound barriers vigorously shaking lose any hold on creation as a permanent, fixed and final reality.
The Creative Beings understand that, "The world is full of interesting ideas, but none of these have saved the world from its madness. So if you have come with expectations of learning new and fascinating things, you may be disappointed. We are here to become acquainted with a state of consciousness that, since ancient times, has been pointed to by masters and teachers and teachings. Many different labels have been attached to that state of consciousness: enlightenment, salvation, liberation, self-realization, the end of suffering, the kingdom of heaven, the pearl of great price...they all point to the possibility of transcending the ordinary human state of consciousness, which has been running the world since the beginning of history. In fact, almost all of human history is a reflection of that ordinary, and in many ways dysfunctional state of consciousness. If there's still anybody left who doubts the dysfunction of the human mind, I suggest two things: You can either read a book on 20th century history, or you can watch TV tonight." - Eckhart Tolle, Author, "The Power of Now" - Summer/Fall 2000 Bodhi Tree Magazine Book Review.
Here is another Human Being also affirming what we are experiencing, that there isn't any rest for the weary, and that Human nature is conflicted upon its sojourn. The infinite studies of movement within the field of mind, the black space as stated many times, demonstrates excessive states of perpetual confusion regarding the nature of life evolving and unfolding beyond all forms, shapes and sizes. Whatever we do stems from life energy in its voyage to accelerate and abound consistently using time and space frameworks. The Artists' perception extracted from visual, auditory and mental qualities of life energy are immense and inconclusive. The constant release of attachment to all manifestations enable the exploration and self-discovery to increase beyond the capacity of inception or conception as well as solidify that we are a product in modality. We are brilliant examples of light particles of this expanding field, energizing infusions of self as the unknown characteristics become revealed step by step. The acts of reality are illusory, therefore the thoughts duality, singularity and partiality become obsolete in effect. We are the life force. The inevitable transformation processes of life's subjects and objects are the saving grace from the selfish limitations, restrictions and boundaries assumed by cultivation. The Human culture is transitory. It last but a nanosecond in concept then obliterates itself into the void of space consumed in time. We are the lessons learned and applied without interference. The total knowledge, understanding and wisdom of creation is consummation itself in order to create itself over and over again. The celestial seed begetting the seeds of life assures life continuum without question, doubt and/or fear to proceed accordingly. There isn't any other means known as a natural backup, clone or duplicate system in operation. The Creation's infinite species are original, authentic articles of Beings which illuminate all that is within this field of 'Cosmic Energy' as we call it, "The Solar System". This is home.
We have managed to survive through the conceptual ideas, theories and actions invoked to test the strength of our capacity for the elimination of genocide, annihilation, armageddon and individual destruction of nature's evolutionary process, and proved that the metaphor of the fox out trapping the fox leads the fox back to square one in calculating its efforts repetitively. Nothing is gained and nothing is lost in creation's unified field, it simply remains the same circumference, here, there, nowhere and everywhere. The charge for every Artists' purpose is to express the divine nature of the Human Being through any dark age as the ultimate radiant Being of light and unconditional love.
The various stages of observations through research and development reveal the conflicts of intellectuals grappling with egoism as ignorance tends to rein supreme. We assume an intelligence above all other species and yet we seem to be the only creature living in contradiction to the natural laws of creation. This self-imagined-prototype in existence seems to have underplayed the potential of life's freedom to embrace all of it's creation without conflict. It is so desperate that it has created an artificial intelligence to validate it's juxtaposition.
This artificial intelligence is constructed within time frames of imagination as experimental pursuits which have confused the harmonic pulse of universal consciousness. What is reality, actuality and truth as related to the sustenance of our well Being? How do these qualities support the miraculous happening of this super nova's emergence? It is the unification of all living things which becomes threatened by the lack of inclusiveness across the boards enforcing means and ways through exclusivity to connotative reasons and justification for control, dominance and power harnessed from the misuse of creation itself, it's inhabitants fighting against themselves.
We are a curious species and should be about the highest qualities of creating, where we can willfully speculate, sense, feel and long to know the secretive source without perpetual states of confusion, violence, hate and greed influencing our system of 'The Evolutionary Expressionisms of Life Energy.'
The extension of the highest qualities into the visible realms will inevitably occur as a part of the equilibrium as we continue on life's course. This is a part of our innate agreement initially to be what we are without self-destruction touted as a reward for honor. The contamination of our Human world is in warp drive and yet nature has successfully hidden away the means that will prevent the overrunning of it's natural system of creation.
This brings our consciousness back to understanding that the very body, mind and soul concepts is a medium, channel, transmission station as an interpreter of thought, not necessarily thought itself. The thinking apparatus we utilize to decipher the variables comprised resources through sciences of reason, rational and logic are invisible. The non-thinking is the highest esteem for gathering self-knowledge which justifies the means to an end which leaves us baffled at our own stupidity to understand the full capacity of nature itself. We are a particle, a speck, a micro-cell with infinite power to change, evolve and grow. The occurrences throughout the universal memory in retrospection catapults our life force into multidimensional directions without warning and/or promission.
Life is its own program. The program inspired to probe and advance itself beyond maximum or optimum functionality. We are not separate from it and therefore have absolutely no control over its creating within this field of energy. The friction; the revelation of constant changes, we represent, as a species. The guess work keeps us alert and active through cycles of evolution moment to moment. Everything we are is derived from continuously traversing this life's dimensions. We are living in an organized field with chaos and confusion at will; we are the components of phenomenal degrees integrating, separating and encompassing the creative process unfolding.
Realizing how fortunate we are to be taking nothing for granted, we are having lots of fun living freely. While uninhibited by the created problems of the world around us, we remain resolved of the world in all of it's camouflaged realities to be divine, therefore we can be in the world but not of the world and affect direct changes in the world from within. We are filled with loving-kindness, compassion and forgiveness for all deluded things we have created to avoid our unification. We forgive ourselves constantly, all the time, especially when we occasionally allow some external thing, place or person to become a determined factor of an outcome, be it positively or negatively, in juxtaposition. There are no authorities to decipher the finality of life. So we dance the dance to the cosmic tune, listening to it's universal beat.
IN THE 1968 FILM, "THE LION IN WINTER", DIRECTED BY ANTHONY HARVEY - STARRING: PETER O'TOOL, KATHERINE HEPBURN, JANE MORROW, ANTHONY HOPKINS, NIGEL TERRY AND TIMOTHY DALTON, (a brilliant complex drama of a royal family. Henry II (O'Toole) gathers his sons and imprisoned queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Hepburn) one Christmas to decide succession to the throne.) ELEANOR EXCLAIMS: "Of course, he has a knife. He always has a knife. We all have knives. Its 1183 and we are barbarians. How clear we make it! Oh my piglets, we are the origins of war - no history forces; nor times; nor justice; nor the lack of it; nor curse; nor religion; nor ideas; nor kinds of governments; nor any other thing. We are the killers! We breed war, we carry it like syphilis inside dead bodies rotting field and stream, because the living ones are rotten. For the love of God can't we love one another just a little! That's how peace begins. We have so much to love one another for. We have such possibilities my children. We could change the world."
The tantamount to this exclaimation is evident today, here and now in the year 2003 - "We are the the world in small. A notion is a Human Thing. It does what we do for our reasons, surely if we are civilized we can put away the knives. We can make peace. We have it in our hands." When we truly choose to experience freedom, we will not be conditioned, enslaved and/or consumed by perpetual duality. We are insistent upon creating here and now the love and the light. We Humans think, emphasizing think, we have separated from the universe (one voice) and attempt to control, direct and manipulate what we call reality, which is an illusion, however this is just an attempt to discover how much further we have to go before we can begin to understand the power of our natural Being.
We are free spirits playing in this beautiful garden wrecking havoc for the experience of it. Then we go home when we are called as a reminder that everything we do is perfectly orchestrated by design. The imperfections assumed by this reality stimulates, inspires and evokes experimentation and creative expressions; stop, look and listen to the silence within, the peace of being still alters the turbulent storms, hurricanes raging continuously upon the surface of this cosmic ocean, 'Pop a whip and a Tiger yields', 'Release the Lion and he will roam the fields'.

"AS I LAY DYING"
BY
WILLIAM FAULKNER
adapted by Edward Kemp
directed by Stefan Novinski
produced by Jennifer Pennington & Amy Watt
LOS ANGELES, CA
"OPEN FIST THEATRE COMPANY"
PRODUCTION
There is much written and said about the Human condition throughout the ages and this particular play isn't any exception. We take the liberty to paraphrase the Open Fist Theatre Company's description of their production, 'Faulkner's daring, multi-layered epic is about the Bundren Family as they brave flood, fire and family strife on an odyssey across the wilds of Mississippi to bury the Mother. The conflicting voices of the seven Bundrens and the many characters they encounter on their journey, explores the absurdity of endurance suffered purely for endurance's sake. A gut wrenching story whose moods range from blackest humor to deepest pathos', this statement is true to form. The universal themes of the Human saga continues to reveal the entrapment of the psychological dilemmas regarding reason, logic, rational and purpose. Who are we? What are we doing? Where are we going? Why are we here? and How did it all begin? Of course, this production of "As I Lay Here Dying" attempts to provide insight, wisdom and enlightenment through the direction and adaptation to these questions, however the answers echo the familiar 'Seek and Ye Shall Find' modality.
"We are the creator of our own world of experience. Consciously or unconsciously, we are molding our world of experience and determining our own destiny. In ingnorance or in wisdom, for good or for evil, we are creating, building, constructing the scenery of that world in which we live and move, and have our being. For weal or for woe, we are thus building. For better or for worse we are thus constructing. Our personal world of experience is largely what we, ourselves, have made it. Our Ideals. What we have been doing unconsciously, we may not proceed to do consciously. By creating and controlling our Ideals, we create and control our world of experience. We may become an active master of creation, instead of a passive slave." - The Secret of Secrets by U.S. Andersen
Human Beings spend an extreme amount of time and energy in chaos and confusion. Our psychological and physical apparatus is in constant turmoil struggling for survival against ourselves. The Bundren Family represents every Human Being's inevitability, "As I Lay Here Dying" is indicative of that quest for the highest purpose for living that is endowed 'To Be' a Human Being, that of total and complete unconditional love. What we see is the opposite of this Human quality. Hate dominates the conscience and vengeance is the order the day. The Mother is saturated with self-loathing without any redeemable attributes once we hear her reasons for punishing her Husband and Family by requesting she be buried in a place of her choosing, which caravan's the entourage on a dangerous mission to fulfill a guilt ridden promised vow. The decomposition of the corpse in a wooden coffin decaying over a number of hot and smoldering days upon their sojourn is absurd. It is the religious overtone of the traditional, conventional dogmatic belief systems that created a combatant of common sense. The Bundrens seem to validate the Human approach of letting faith go and holding onto fear tooth and nail. Life is a living hell to fear religiously and Death is its reward, so hold on for everlasting peace. This is a grave contradiction in divine consciousness. Are we truly this dysfunctional as Human Beings? Yes! and Why? Because we are willing slaves to sufferings imposed upon us by those who presume authority to know better than we do for our salvation. Faulkner is correct in revealing the ignorance, gullibility and weaknesses of his characters. The flawed behaviors that are conditioned habits perpetrate the patterns strengthened by resentments, jealousy and rage against everything wonderful that life has in offering as heaven here and now upon earth. The omission of the universal principles naturally a part of every cell of the Human Being is severe and costly. There isn't any joy in the world. Every relationship is self-serving with ulterior motives to take, take, take without giving anything in return. The world is evil, people are cruel, therefore everyone must DIE!
The narrative streaming throughout this adaptation, profoundly spoken by the character Darl (Joesph Mellis), the eldest son, "As I Lay Here Dying" rides the subtle nuance of an undercurrent which topples the belief that "The greatest trick the Devil has played on man is to convince him that he doesn't exist." The profile and facsimile of Darl's twist and turns leading to the deranged conclusion of his Human Being suggest that we are insane to assume there is an escape from the truth that Life is an illusion. That nothing exist until thought into existence, be it good, bad and/or indifferent. That every aspect of the Human experience is conveyed in the play of phenomenal existence, 'The Divine Comedy with a touch of Tragedy producing the interpretive Human Drama'. Faulkner's "As I lay Here Dying" encourages Human Beings to come to understand and forgive themselves here and now.
This production's direction is indeed dark, tough, drab and bleak . It seems to overshadow the brief but essential glimpses of light piercing through as encouragement to Human Beings, that all is an act of a fleeting reality. That one doesn't have to curse and/or subject one's family and friends to the misery, pain, sorrows and sufferings due to ones selfish nature which produces disappointment and unhappiness.
It is always a revelation when Human Beings transcend their trials and tribulations imbedded in turmoil, strife and anger passed from generation to generation. The psychological conditioning held onto vigorously as an identity of self (a personal self) that resist, bickers, and destroys possibility is delusion. The elimination of superior/inferior complexes used as excuses to separate, divide and isolate ourselves from one another distances the truly divine qualities of Human connection as One, not Two! Faulkner affirms that people don't want to hear what is counter to their beliefs and/or systems of conditioning, even though they are constantly asking the same questions to which they have the answers, "As I Lay Here Dying".
The cast of actors, the talented individuals, comprising this ensemble are to be commended for undertaking such a task. The general presentation under the direction given was proficient, however the risk factor was compromised slightly. The Human Drama is filled with the highest stakes within all of Creation. The emotional struggle is immense! There was a sense of caution, hesitation and emotional monitoring in key places that rhythmically if allowed freedom of execution may have brought tears of variance as its effect out of compassion by the audience for the Bundrens. The very depth of Human Being is vast. We cannot wait for anything to have an experience when we are the experience of life itself. The theatrical experiences provided by the actor must go beyond acting techniques, training and methods. We must as the audience feel every breath, gesture, movement as the ultimate one moment happening in space and time. There are transitions, climaxes and changes within each character's sojourn that needed the relational connections of sparks, fire and music to transcend just the visible but reveal the invisible bonding of the interconnected universal polarity. We need each other and cannot proceed in life without one another as the essential energy requires us to be Human Beings moving about. The revelations, catharsis, redemption and/or just simple changes from beginning point to ending point of every single Human Being must reveal where we are in the cause and effects during the evolutionary processes occurring thoughout the play.
It appeared through observation that the cast needed emotional freedom in order to tap into the deeper levels of interrelated creativity without any fabrication and/or superficiality as they road the tidal wave surface of this presentation successfully. The miracle of contrasting colors within the range of Human emotions sustains the field of life's energy brilliantly when the cast comes close to producing total freedom within the spontaneity of the Human drama, by Being the characters instead of acting the characters. The set, lights, costumes, props and make-up in this production complemented each other beautifully. The integrated simplicity, rustic eloquence and shadowy moods established by the technical menage implemeted by 'The Open Fist Theatre Company' production team and crew provided the highest presentational quality of William Faulkner's "As I Lay Here Dying" in this year, at this time, on this plane of creative expression. The greatest joy of Theatre is that it lives, in the moment, and is happening now! This production has been extended until May 10, 2003. Bravo-Brava!

NANCY SCHEINMAN
"As the viewer shifts position, the light changes, time passes, and the luster of the jewel-like copper surface fluctuates, exposing layers of images not immediately seen. The abstract and the concrete, the expected and the unexpected combine to convey a complex narrative. The geometric arrangement of the elements of my paintings is not unlike the freeform quilts women pieced together in the past. Like fabric, sheets of copper are cut and collaged together. The copper is hand embossed, washed with acid, the resulting patina cured and sealed, then nailed over a wooden support and painted. Mystery and secrets are worked into layers eventually revealed, linking me to the spiritual aspects of "women's work." The repetitive nailing of the copper to the wood, keeps me focused, grounded. I remember being in my grandmother's studio when I was four years old. The smells of turpentine, of clay, and other unusual mixtures intrigued me. Looking around there were still lifes set up, head portraits in clay on sculpture stands, and a huge painting on one of those large crank-up easels. I picked up some brushes, and went over to paint on the large painting, she gently moved my arm away and told me I was ready for my first drawing lesson. Looking into a glass of water, she spoke of the ellipse and our point of view.
I feel it is part of the obligation of artists of all forms to examine the culture that we live in and through their creative process, create a world that reflects one that they would like to live in. My paintings present a sense of place, not a place imagined, but one desired. Through art we are taken back to the past, we are bound to those who have passed through time before us, and are able to experience through their works of art, their passions, their dreams and the lives they led. My vision, and my art are part of this continuum of artistic expression. Through each generation, a feeling of discovery is renewed through the art of previous generations. I believe that artwork being created today will eventually be rediscovered and through investigations by other artists and interested people, the evolution of consciousness of humanity will continue. We, as artists must seek to continue to create a dialogue about the importance of art, expression and imagination in our culture. I feel that artists collective energy should be shared with children in collaboration on artistic projects in all art forms. Cross generational experiential learning should be part of the ongoing art curriculum in schools. Hopefully artists will take seriously the responsibility of continuing to share their visions with future generations."
The Difference Between Water
"Try to imagine a world without art, and for me this is impossible. Art is the window into which we look to understand our own human condition, our inner selves, and it reflects back to us the world in which we create. Due to the nature of the materials used, my images rely somewhat on an element of chance.
I use acid washes over sheets of copper that produce beautiful patinas, subject (in color and shape) to temperature, humidity and application. I allow the sensuous marks and stains formed by the patinas to help determine the image. With no preliminary drawings or outside sketches, the paintings emerge in an intuitive manner.
There have been many artists who have influenced my work. Most recently I feel a connection with medieval artists who boxed related sub-text of narratives and incorporated them into a primary image. The landscapes of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, the florals/ landscapes of Martin Johnson Heade, the patterning of Persian miniatures, the whimsy of Chagall, all are part of my collective experience along with the works of many other artists, both past and present. I am always looking, always studying. For me, the most difficult challenge I face as a painter is finding the balance between being in the family/community and being in the studio. At the end of my work day it is always a challenge to wash my brushes, get into the car, and transform back into Mom, and pick up the kids."
