A CELEBRATION OF THE LIFE
OF
ROGER ALAN FREEMAN

EXCERPT FROM THE MEMORIAL SERVICE AT LARGO COMMUNITY CHURCH,
REV. ALEXANDER DABNEV, OFFICIATINA

Roger Alan Freeman was born on July 22, 1961 in Washington, DC to Joyce and Edward Freeman. Joined by his sister Angela in 1967, Roger and his family chose to reside in the greater Washington metropolitan area throughout their lives.

Roger graduated from Ballou Senior High School in 1979. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute for two years where he pledged Phi Beta Sigma fraternity before transferring to Howard University. He graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Business Administration, majoring in finance.

In 1983, while at Howard University, Roger met Kathy Polk, a fellow finance major. They got to know and love each other and joined hands in marriage on January 12, 1985.

Roger's professional career in finance began with the U.S. Government before he moved to health care finance with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. From there, he joined Kaiser Permanente where his talents advanced him to the position of Senior Data Analyst. His long tenure with Kaiser Permanente lasted 16 years.

Throughout Roger's life, he loved music. Taught as a young teen by his father, he took up the bass guitar and never put it down. He become a musician and has played the bass for 30 years. His current band, Alternate Root, has performed all over the Washington metropolitan area as well as Philadelphia, Richmond, and the island nation of Jamaica. The band's CD is nearing completion and will be dedicated to his memory.

After seven years as a couple, Roger and Kathy began their journey as parents with the birth of their daughter, Gayla. Adding to the delight of the new grandparents. Gayla was joined by her sister, Lynnae, three years later. The girls adored their father and he treasured them.

Roger made a great impression on all who knew him. His wry sense of humor and quick wit, make people laugh all the time. His passion for his music and his dedication to his family were a model for all around him. Roger was always the man you could count on when you needed him.

Those who miss Roger include his beloved wife, Kathy; his precious daughters, Gayla and Lynnae; his loving parents, Joyce and Ed; his devoted sister, Angela; aunt, Gerline Rountree; grandmother, Lois Samuels; father and mother-in-law, Rev. George and Dorothea Polk; brother-in-law, Allyn Polk; his band, Alternate Root: his colleagues at Kaiser Permanente; many extended relatives and a host of friends; and last, but certainly not least, his trusted canine companion, Turk.
